Bandi Dr Sanjay Kumar MLA Loses Karimnagar Seat to BRS’s Gangula Kamalakar Reddy

Bandi Dr Sanjay Kumar MLA, the BJP’s firebrand MP and ex-state chief, suffered a shocking defeat in the Karimnagar assembly seat in the Telangana elections 2023. He lost to his rival Gangula Kamalakar Reddy of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party by a margin of 3,163 votes1

A Close Contest

The Karimnagar seat was one of the most keenly contested seats in the state, as it witnessed a direct fight between two prominent leaders of the BJP and the BRS. Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who is also the MP from Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency, was confident of retaining the seat for the BJP, as he had won it in 2019 with a huge margin of over 89,000 votes. He had also led the BJP’s campaign in the state as the party’s president until October 2023, when he resigned to focus on his assembly election.

Gangula Kamalakar Reddy, on the other hand, was the incumbent MLA from Karimnagar, who had won the seat in 2018 with a margin of over 14,000 votes. He had defected from the TRS to the BRS in 2022, along with former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao and other senior leaders. He was also the chairman of the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) and a close aide of KCR.

The contest between the two leaders was neck and neck, as both of them campaigned aggressively and mobilized their supporters. The issues that dominated the election were the development of Karimnagar, the welfare of the farmers, the implementation of the central schemes, the corruption and nepotism of the TRS, and the regional sentiment of the Telangana people.

The Final Result

The counting of votes began on December 3, 2023, and the result was declared on December 4, 2023. The final tally showed that Gangula Kamalakar Reddy secured 1,02,453 votes, while Bandi Sanjay Kumar got 99,290 votes. The difference between the two candidates was only 3,163 votes, which was 1.53% of the total votes polled. The voter turnout in the seat was 74.21%, which was slightly lower than the state average of 75.34%.

The BRS candidate attributed his victory to the support of the people and the leadership of KCR. He thanked the voters for reposing their faith in him and promised to work for the development and welfare of Karimnagar. He also congratulated Bandi Sanjay Kumar for putting up a tough fight and said that he would cooperate with him for the betterment of the constituency.

The BJP candidate, however, refused to accept the result and alleged that there was a massive rigging and manipulation of votes by the BRS. He claimed that there were discrepancies in the EVMs and the VVPATs and that many of his supporters were prevented from voting. He demanded a recounting of votes and a verification of the VVPAT slips. He also said that he would approach the court and the Election Commission to challenge the result.

The Implications

The result of the Karimnagar seat has a significant impact on the political scenario of Telangana. It is a major setback for the BJP, which had hoped to emerge as the main opposition party in the state and challenge the TRS-BRS alliance. It is also a personal blow for Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who had staked his prestige and reputation on the seat. He had resigned from the party’s state president post and had campaigned extensively in the constituency. He had also raised several controversial issues, such as the alleged land grabbing by KCR and his family, the alleged involvement of the TRS-BRS leaders in the drugs case, and the alleged appeasement of the minorities by the TRS-BRS government. He had also tried to invoke the nationalist and Hindutva sentiments of the voters and accused the TRS-BRS of being anti-national and anti-Hindu.

The result is a boost for the BRS, which had formed a pre-poll alliance with the TRS and had contested 40 seats out of the 119 in the state. It is also a vindication for KCR, who had rebelled against the TRS leadership and had formed a new party with his loyalists. He had claimed that the TRS had deviated from the original Telangana movement and had betrayed the people of the state. He had also promised to fulfill the unfulfilled promises of the statehood agitation, such as the enhancement of the reservation for the backward classes, the implementation of the land reforms, and the creation of more jobs and opportunities for the youth.

The result is also a reflection of the mood and preference of the voters of Karimnagar, who have chosen a regional party over a national party. They have also preferred a local leader over an outsider, as Bandi Sanjay Kumar hails from Nizamabad district and had shifted to Karimnagar only in 2019. They have also shown their satisfaction with the performance of the BRS candidate, who had delivered on the development and welfare schemes in the constituency.
